If you’ve ever planned on running a marathon, first-timer Alan Butler has some sage words of advice when it comes to the training and preparation involved. Bonus if you’re fundraising.
I’ve known Alan Butler for a few years now. We’ve shared the stage with Devious Theatre and Watergate Productions over the years, most recently for Heart Shaped Vinyl in May of this year, while he’s just closed KATS Theatre Group’s War at the Watergate this past week.
Having recently returned to the Marble City from Kildare, Alan is getting set to run the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon at the end of October, his first time to undertake such an event. When he does it, he’ll be trying to raise funds for the recently opened Owning House Retirement Village in Owning, near Piltown in the south of Kilkenny.
I sat down with Alan for a chat about the charity and his family connections to it, along with the preparation – physically, mentally and diet – that you need to go through if you’ve got a marathon in mind.
If it’s something that’s on your bucket list or things to do before the year is out, this is worth a listen.
