If you’ve had that niggling urge to get a book written, or have a story worth telling, then a competition currently being run by Cork-based Mercier Press.
The publishing house recently launched the semi self-titled Mercier Press Fiction Competition, targetted at the first-time fiction author “with the potential to become a best-selling writer”. Ultimately the publishing deal is the prize on offer, but it comes with €1,000 in cash and professional development and support to match.
How do I enter?
To enter aspiring authors must submit 10,000-12,000 words of original fiction aimed at young adults or adults, as well as a 1,000 word synopsis of the full novel. Full details can be found on MercierPress.ie.
Entrants must be resident in Ireland and are only eligible to enter if they have not had a novel published or released into the public domain in any format, including but not limited to the Internet. The competition is looking for new work. The closing date for submissions is 1 February 2017.
To find out more, I had a chat with publicist Deirdre Roberts which you can hear below as she lays out the full details of the competition.

The prize itself is a publishing deal with Mercier Press and this includes a few extras, namely
- Professional cover design, including provision of cover image
