Pinch to zoom on Instagram? Now you can, on iPhone at least

iPhone Instagram users rejoice – you can now ‘pinch to zoom’ on your favourite photos in your timeline.

It’s the simplest of features. You hand a complete beginner to smartphones and there’s a near instant reflex to swipe, tap, pinch.

While the Facebook-owned photography app boasts around a half billion monthly users, the new zoom feature is currently restricted to those on iOS devices, with Android availability seemingly a few weeks off yet.

Via Instagram,

“Starting today, you can pinch to zoom on photos and videos in feed, on profiles and on Explore. Dive into an adorable puppy’s smile or into every detail of your friend’s new shirt. Over the past six months, you’ve seen many exciting changes come to Instagram, from a new icon to longer videos and even a new way to share everyday moments with Instagram Stories. And as things change, we’re still focused on improving the core parts of Instagram.

Zoom is available today for Instagram on iOS. Zoom will be available on Android in the coming weeks.”

Early updaters report mixed responses to the zoom feature working and not working. I would be interested in seeing how far Instagram can, or indeed if they will, up the maximum image dimensions within the app in order to make better use of the images.

This, as opposed to pixelating your well cropped and filters Instagram snaps with a misguided flick of the fingers.

With a number of Instagram accounts on my iPhone 5S, I can pinch or pull to zoom (though it doesn’t stay zoomed) on work-related accounts, though no dice yet on my personal account.
