Brian Friel’s Translations performed at the Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny, in April 2016 as the first of a planned series of collaborations. Some of these photos were used in the press promo for the show – see Translations on stage here.
All the shots were taken in the courtyard in Rothe House & Garden on Parliament Street, Kilkenny, about a month out from the opening of the production.
Alan Butler and Muireann Ryan (both pictured in all photos here) were cast as the love interests. The show itself is set in the fictional townland of Ballybeg / Baile Beag in County Donegal, in August 1833, at a hedge-school. There, /Aan Irish-speaking agricultural community adjusts to the arrival of a detachment of British Army Royal Engineers.
With Barnstorm celebrating 25 years of making theatre in Kilkenny this year, the happening of Translations is hopefully the first of more combined works with the Watergate that will take to the stage, particularly where curriculum works are concerned.
Translations was staged at the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny in April 2016. My thanks to Alan Butler, Muireann Ryan, Nuala Roche, Philip Hardy and Ger Cody.
